Sometimes plots and characters become so familiar to us, our habits so ingrained, that it’s hard to see beyond the borders of our stories or feel energised about starting new work. It may be time to drop down the rabbit hole.

This course will present strategies to lift you out of ruts and help you solve problems in your stories or essays. The goal? To take risks, uncover new possibilities, and follow them wherever they may lead…

Weekly assignments will give you practical ways to find inspiration or gain new insight into existing work. Scott will provide feedback on all assignments. Suitable for writers of all genres and levels.

Week One: Restrict Yourself

It may sound like a contradiction, but the more restrictions we place on our writing, the more our imagination and word count can grow. We’ll impose forms on our stories and explore the rewards of being random.

Week Two: Think Small

In Module Two, we’ll whittle down our stories to discover what’s at the centre, learn the power of a single vivid detail, and bring urgency to our narratives.

Week Three: Think Big

We’ll expand the frontiers of our stories, focus on the bigger narrative arc, and investigate the ways that history and culture can guide our characters and plots.

Week Four: The 4th Dimension

This module explores the manipulation of time: slowing down, speeding up, and projecting ourselves into the future to gain perspective on our stories.
